Preity Zinta hots up Vogue

Preity Zinta may not be having any movie releases any time soon but the actress has been quite busy. Besides jazzing up the Indian Premiere League, the actress is making the latest Vogue cover look good.

Check out the June issue of Vogue, where Preity [Images] talks about her IPL experience.

The actress, who made heads turn at the 61st Cannes Film Festival, sure looks good in yellow.

Preity zinta is definitely not given importance on her facial expressions in this pic. More importance was given to make things look bigger than they actually are so that it makes her look sexy.

Her twins are not as big as they look...!!! Definitely she must have used some aid for upliftment of the downtrodden...!

Seven mysterious creatures of Japan

Bigfoot. The Loch Ness Monster. The Abominable Snowman. Tales of unidentified mysterious animals have long intrigued and captured the imagination of people around the world — and Japan is no exception. Here is a brief introduction to 7 of the island nation’s most notorious cryptids, complete with grainy photographs where available. Whether you regard these tales as fact or fiction, their impact on the culture where they were encountered is undeniable.

- Hibagon

Hibagon --

The Hibagon (a.k.a. Hinagon) is a cryptic hominid, similar to Bigfoot, inhabiting the area around Mt. Hiba in northern Hiroshima prefecture. According to numerous eyewitness accounts from the early 1970s, the Hibagon stands about 1.5 to 1.7 meters (about 5 ft) tall, weighs an estimated 80 to 90 kilograms (about 180 lbs), is covered in a thick coat of black or brown fur (sometimes it is reported as having a spot of white fur on its chest or arms), and has an unusually large triangular head and intelligent human-like eyes. The Hibagon received its name from the local animal control board.

Hibagon --

The first known Hibagon sighting occurred on July 20, 1970 in the area around Mt. Hiba near the border with Tottori prefecture. Three days after the initial sighting, the furry ape-like creature was seen again walking through a rice paddy in the nearby rural town of Saijo. A total of 12 sightings were reported that year, and mysterious footprints were found in the snow that December.

Numerous Hibagon sightings were reported in areas surrounding Mt. Hiba in the summers between 1971 and 1973, as increased human activity during the hunting season forced the creature down from the mountain. On August 15, 1974, the Hibagon was photographed as it hid behind a persimmon tree. Unusual footprints measuring 20 centimeters (9 in) long were found nearby. After this photo was taken, the Hibagon went back into hiding, only to be seen two more times — once in 1980 and again in 1982 — before disappearing forever.

Hibagon --

The Hibagon may have disappeared long ago, but the residents of Saijo have not forgotten. The town has adopted the likeness of the creature as its mascot, and souvenir shops sell Hibagon Eggs and other cryptid ape-themed sweets. [More]

- Tsuchinoko

Tsuchinoko --
Tsuchinoko — Reality? Myth? Or mistaken identity?

The Tsuchinoko is a snake-like cryptid found throughout Japan, except in Hokkaido and the Okinawan islands. Reports describe the Tsuchinoko as having a thick, stubby body measuring 30 to 80 centimeters (12 to 30 in) in length, often with a distinct neck, gray, brown or black scaly skin, and venomous fangs. Some accounts suggest the Tsuchinoko has a loud, high-pitched squeak and can jump as far as one meter.

Tsuchinoko --

The earliest known written record of the Tsuchinoko dates back to the 7th century, where it appears in the Kojiki (Records of Ancient Matters), the oldest surviving book in Japan. In some legends, the Tsuchinoko can speak, has a tendency to tell lies, and enjoys the taste of alcohol.

Tsuchinoko --

Skeptics dismiss Tsuchinoko sightings as simple cases of mistaken identity, suggesting the creatures are nothing more than snakes in the process of digesting large meals, or perhaps even escaped exotic pets such as the blue-tongued lizard.

Tsuchinoko --

Regardless, local tourist boards in rural areas frequently organize Tsuchinoko hunts to attract visitors, promising large sums of money to any participant lucky enough to capture one. The town of Itoigawa in Niigata prefecture, for example, has a hunt scheduled for June 8, 2008 and is offering a 100 million yen (about $1 million) reward to whoever brings one back alive. [More]

- Kusshii

Kusshii --

Kusshii is a giant lake monster believed to inhabit Hokkaido’s Lake Kussharo, a large freshwater lake located in an environment and climate similar to that of the famed Loch Ness. According to eyewitness accounts, Kusshi is 10 to 20 meters (30 to 60 ft) long and has humps on its back, a long neck and a pair of horns on its head. Reports suggest it can swim as fast as a motorboat. Kusshii’s most famous appearances include a 1973 sighting by 40-member team of biologists from Hokkaido University, as well as 15 separate reports by tourists in 1974.

* * * * *

- Isshii

Isshii --

Isshii, another Japanese cryptid lake monster, is believed to inhabit Kagoshima prefecture’s 20,000-year-old Lake Ikeda, the largest caldera lake in Kyushu. The creature is similar in appearance to Kusshii, but larger.

Isshii entered the public consciousness in September 1978, after more than 20 people reportedly witnessed a giant creature moving at a blistering speed through the water. Widespread news coverage of the sighting brought a flood of tourists to the lake, and in December of the same year, a photograph was taken showing what some believe is the back of the creature poking through the water surface. Since 1990, a number of home videos have emerged showing mysterious activity just under the water surface, but none of the videos are widely seen as irrefutable proof of Isshii’s existence.

Some theories suggest Isshii could be an unidentified descendant of the Plesiosaur, while others believe it to be some sort of giant eel. Other theories suggest the sightings can be explained as rogue waves generated by winds unique to the lake.

Rogue waves cannot, however, explain what happened in 1961, when a large-scale search was conducted for a US military jet believed to have crashed in the lake. Sonar equipment used in the search reportedly revealed a large rock-shaped object moving through the water below, and records indicate that divers on the lake floor were nearly attacked by a large, unidentified creature.

- Giant Snake of Mt. Tsurugi

Mt. Tsurugi, the second highest peak on the island of Shikoku, is steeped in mystery. According to one local legend, the mountain is actually a giant man-made pyramid, and another legend says that a hoard of King Solomon’s secret treasure lies buried within. A giant snake believed to be guarding that treasure has been sighted on many occasions.

Giant snake of Mt. Tsurugi -- In May 1973, a group of 4 forestry workers reportedly encountered a 10 meter (33 ft) long snake as big around as a telephone pole. The creature was described as having shiny black scales, and it reportedly made a loud chirping sound. In the months that followed, local officials organized a large-scale hunt for the snake, enlisting the help of hundreds of volunteers. While the creature was not apprehended, the searchers did find what appeared to be giant snake tracks that measured 40 centimeters (16 in) wide and passed alongside fallen trees.

A local history museum has in its collection a large jawbone measuring 34 centimeters (13 in) across, which many believe belongs to the giant snake. Others speculate it belongs to a shark.

- Takitaro

Takitarou --

The Takitaro is a type of giant fish measuring up to 3 meters (10 ft) long, which is found in Yamagata prefecture’s Lake Otoriike. Located nearly 1,000 meters above sea level, the remote mountain lake was created ages ago when an earthquake triggered a massive landslide that dammed up a mountain stream.

The Takitaro appears in a number of stories throughout the 20th-century. In 1917, for example, a pair of men are said to have captured a 1.5 meter (5 ft) long fish that was large enough to feed 20 floodgate construction workers for 4 days. In 1982, a group of mountain climbers above the lake observed a fish over 2 meters (6.5 ft) long in the clear water below. This sighting grabbed headlines nationwide.

Three years later, in 1985, a team of scientists went to the lake in search of the Takitaro. Sonar equipment revealed the presence of giant fish, and the scientists identified some smaller specimens as relatives of ancient salmon that likely became trapped in the lake when it was formed long ago. The true identity of the giant Takitaro, however, remains a mystery, but some believe it is a mutant descendant of these ancient fish.

- Kappa

Kappa (river imps) have appeared in countless stories and folk legends for centuries, and they rank among Japan’s most well-known cryptids. While most people nowadays regard the amphibious child-sized troublemakers as pure myth, stories of kappa encounters still crop up from time to time, such as the following two reports from Japan’s southern island of Kyushu.

Kappa -- Kappa -- Kappa --

Report 1 — Slimy Footprints at the River’s Edge: At around 11 PM on August 1, 1984 in the town of Tsushima in Nagasaki prefecture, a squid fisherman named Ryu Shirozaki was walking home from the local pier after work. As he passed near the Kuta river, he came upon a small group of children playing at the water’s edge. While it was not entirely uncommon to encounter people fishing in the river at night, it was rather surprising to see youngsters there.

As Shirozaki approached the children, he was struck by how bizarre they appeared in the moonlight. He could make out swarthy faces, unusually spindly arms and legs, and glistening skin. Suspicious, Shirozaki called out to them as he neared, but they seemed startled and quickly disappeared into the water.

The next morning when he returned to the same spot, Shirozaki discovered a set of moist, teardrop-shaped footprints on the nearby pavement. The prints, which appeared to consist of a slimy substance that had begun to coagulate under the hot morning sun, stretched for about 20 meters. Each footprint measured 22 centimeters (about 10 in) long and 12 centimeters (5 in) wide, and they were spaced about 50 to 60 centimeters (about 2 ft) apart.

Shirozaki and a few curious onlookers immediately suspected the footprints belonged to a kappa. People began to gather around as the news spread quickly through town, and all agreed the prints belonged to a kappa. In the minds of many residents, the footprints confirmed the existence of the river imps they knew through local legends.

When police forensic investigators arrived on the scene, they determined that the slimy footprints consisted of an unknown secretion. They took a sample to the lab for analysis, but the results unfortunately turned out to be inconclusive because the sample was too small. The police eventually dropped their investigation, and the mystery of the slimy footprints was never solved.

Report 2 — The Unclean Guest: Another recent kappa encounter occurred on June 30, 1991 in the town of Saito in Miyazaki prefecture, when an office worker named Mitsugu Matsumoto and his wife Junko returned home for the evening. Upon opening the front door, the Matsumotos were confronted with a strange smell inside their home. Inside, they found dozens of small, wet footprints around the front door and in the hallway, bathroom, and two tatami rooms. At first they suspected a burglar, but they soon realized nothing had been stolen.

The police briefly surveyed the house, but found nothing except a floor soiled by 30 footprints, each measuring about 7 centimeters long and 6 centimeters wide, and having 4 or 5 toes. To Matsumoto, the footprints did not look human, nor did they appear to belong to any animal he could imagine.

Later that night, as Mrs. Matsumoto was putting laundry away, she discovered an unusual orange stain on some clothing. The next morning, as Matsumoto inspected the house more closely, he discovered a deposit of orange liquid on the portable stereo in the tatami room. He took a sample to the local public health center for analysis, and the results indicated the liquid had an extremely high iron content and a chemical composition resembling spring water.

Troubled by the incident, Matsumoto decided to visit a shaman. After listening to Matsumoto’s story, the shaman encouraged him not to worry, explaining that the kappa indigenous to the nearby swamp enjoyed playing the occasional prank on local residents. The kappa were harmless, the shaman told him.

Harmless, perhaps, but Matsumoto found the kappa difficult to clean up after. He tried using detergent, paint thinner and gasoline to remove the footprints and orange stains, but nothing seemed to work.

Chinese Are Left to Ask Why Schools Crumbled

Du Bin for The New York Times

UNEQUAL DAMAGE. Xinjian Primary School in Dujiangyan was destroyed, while a kindergarten, at left, and a hotel were barely damaged.

DUJIANGYAN, China — The earthquake’s destruction of Xinjian Primary School was swift and complete. Hundreds of children were crushed as the floors collapsed in a deluge of falling bricks and concrete. Days later, as curiosity seekers came with video cameras and as parents came to grieve, the four-story school was no more than rubble.

In contrast, none of the nearby buildings were badly damaged. A separate kindergarten less than 20 feet away survived with barely a crack. An adjacent 10-story hotel stood largely undisturbed. And another local primary school, Beijie, catering to children of the elite, was in such good condition that local officials were using it as a refugee center.

“This is not a natural disaster,” said Ren Yongchang, whose 9-year-old son died inside the destroyed school. His hands were covered in plaster dust as he stood beside the rubble, shouting and weeping as he grabbed the exposed steel rebar of a broken concrete column. “This is not good steel. It doesn’t meet standards. They stole our children.”

There is no official figure on how many children died at Xinjian Primary School, nor on how many died at scores of other schools that collapsed in the powerful May 12 earthquake in Sichuan Province. But the number of student deaths seems likely to exceed 10,000, and possibly go much higher, a staggering figure that has become a simmering controversy in China as grieving parents say their children might have lived had the schools been better built.

The Chinese government has enjoyed broad public support for its handling of the earthquake, and in Sichuan on Saturday, Secretary General Ban Ki-moon of the United Nations praised the government’s response.

But as parents at different schools begin to speak out, the question of whether official negligence, and possibly corruption, contributed to the student deaths could turn public opinion. The government has launched an investigation, but censors, wary of the public mood, are trying to suppress the issue in state-run media and online.

An examination of the collapse of Xinjian Primary School offers a disturbing picture of a calamity that might have been avoided. Many parents say they were told the school was unsafe. Xinjian was poorly built when it opened its doors in 1992, they say, and never got its share of government funds for reconstruction because of its low ranking in the local education bureaucracy and the low social status of its students.

A decade ago, a detached wing of the school was torn down and rebuilt because of safety concerns. But the main building remained unimproved. Engineers and earthquake experts who examined photographs of its wreckage concluded that the structure had many failings and one critical flaw: inadequate iron reinforcing rods running up the school’s vertical columns. One expert described the unstable concrete floor panels as “time bombs.”

Xinjian also was ill-equipped for a crisis. An ambulance and other rescue vehicles that responded after the earthquake could not fit through the entrance into the school’s courtyard. A bulldozer finally dug up beneath the front gate to create enough overhead clearance. Parents say they believe several hundred of the school’s 660 pupils died.

“It is impossible to describe,” said a nurse standing on the rubble of the Xinjian site. “There is death everywhere.”

Schools are vulnerable to earthquakes, especially in developing nations where less attention is paid to building codes. The quake in Sichuan Province has already claimed 60,560 lives, and some of the flattened schools, especially those buried under landslides, could not have stood under any circumstances. The government has not provided a public list of those schools, but one early estimate concluded that more than 7,000 “schoolrooms” were destroyed.

China has national building codes intended to ensure that major structures withstand earthquakes. The government also has made upgrading or replacing substandard schools a priority as part of a broader effort to improve and expand education. Yet codes are spottily enforced. In March 2006, Sichuan Province issued a notice that local governments must inspect schools because too many remained unsafe, according to one official Web site.

KC Concepcion was Richard Gutierrez’s high school crush

KC CONCEPCION have signed up last Thursday with GMA Films for the Valentine movie she’s doing with Richard Gutierrez. This was held at the GMA Network office and this time, it’s Richard’s turn to escort KC around after she guided him in their pictorial at the ABS camp last Tuesday.

Their movie is entitled “When I Met You” and will be written and directed by Joey Reyes to be partly filmed in Paris and scheduled to open on February 11. They will start shooting in September after the first Richard-KC movie under the Star Cinema banner is shown in August. KC calls her leading man Chard while Richard calls her Kayce. It’s apparent that they’re very much comfortable in each other’s company.

At the ABS pictorial, Richard and KC were interviewed by Chard’s Ate Ruffa for “The Buzz.” After the contract signing at GMA, they were interviewed by Chard’s twin brother, Raymond, for “Showbiz Central.” The observation of those who were present in both interviews is that Raymond was more successful in bringing out more juicy bits of information, including the details of the recent birthday party of KC held on a private beach where Chard was a guest.

He was even observant enough that both Chard and KC are wearing the color blue. He inquired if they had prior agreement as to what color they will wear for that day. He also revealed that the two first met in a high school prom years ago and that Chard has had a crush on KC even then, making his brother blush.

Will KC also be doing “Captain Barbell Meets Darna” on TV with GMA-7? “It’s up to my managers,” says KC. “Darna is a big part of Pinoy pop culture and who wouldn’t want to be a part of Pinoy pop culture, di ba? But I guess it also depends on Richard as he’ll be Captain Barbell.”

“Of course, it’ll be a dream come true for me,” Richard says. “But as of now, we’re just thankful that GMA agreed to lend me to ABS and ABS is now lending KC to GMA kaya natuloy ang pagtatambal namin. We’re happy to be part of the process in making the two top networks together.”

But how come we have a feeling that their Star Cinema movie will not be completed in time for an August release? It’s almost June and they only have two months to finish it. Its director, Joyce Bernal, is busy with “Dyesebel” and she says she will have to shoot part of the yet untitled flick for 10 days in Santorini and Mykonos, Greece. Richard, in turn, is busy with his new show, “Codename: Asero.” Realistically speaking, they will be facing a lot of odds to meet their August deadline.

Top 5 Asian Honeymoon Destinations

Every newlywed couple dreams of spending a few weeks doing new things and visiting unfamiliar places. While most couples are eyeing a honeymoon in Hawaii and the Caribbean, why not choose a place that is entirely new to you and your spouse?

A honeymoon in Europe can cost a lot and after an expensive wedding, spending a lot of Euros just to visit places commonly visited by other honeymooners as well seems to be impractical. If you are looking for unique destinations that do not cost much but can equal if not rival the pleasure of a European getaway then why not take a look at what the Asian region has to offer?

India

Indiais an enchanting place not only for the country's philosophy but also for the exotic places you can easily visit like the Taj Mahal. Of course, you can have your fill of swimming and other water-based activities in Puri and Kerala but an experience at the Palace on Wheels will definitely be unforgettable. The Palace on Wheels is a luxury train ride that will take you Taj Mahal, Lake Palace in Udaipur and other exotic destinations.

Philippines

Next to India, the Philippines is where you can get more value for your dollars. You can choose a honeymoon package that will take you to the world-famous Boracay, Palawan and Samal Island. Boracay is famous for its white sand beaches that stretch over nine kilometers long. This place is definitely for honeymooners who only have eyes only for each other. A visit to Palawan will take you to the last frontier of the Philippines. It is the location of two World Heritage Sites: the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park and the Tubbataha Reef National Marine Park. Would it be more exciting to visit the place where the biggest pearl (9.45 inches) in the world was found? And speaking of pearls, your honeymoon wouldn't be complete without a visit to Pearl Farm in Samal Island in Davao City. The city has been named one of the most livable cities in Asia. Pearl Farm has been identified as a protected fish sanctuary and it is one of the best places to go snorkeling.

China

Why not take advantage of your honeymoon and discover historical places that no one in your social milieu may have discovered yet? China is the best place to go for a discovery honeymoon. The famous Great Wall of China, which spans over 4,000 miles, is full of history by itself and has been listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Make sure you include the Forbidden City (known for being the seat of the Emperor's power) and the Tiananmen Square in your itinerary.

Thailand

Exotic Bangkok is a shopping haven so make sure you drop by before leaving Thailand. However, if you have a weakness for beautiful beaches then a honeymoon in Phuket and Phi Phi Island should be on top of your list. Bangkok is the city of temples and one of the most famous temples here is the Temple of the Golden Buddha which houses the solid gold Buddha statue. Take your spouse to a dinner cruise along the Choaphaya River.

Vietnam

Vietnam's Red River Delta and the Mekong Delta have captured the heart of many honeymooners. The raw beauty of this rustic place is an ideal location for couples who want to see what's on away from the hustle and bustle of cities like New York and Los Angeles. Preity Zinta : Har Pal

Har Pal
Banner -
Director Jahnu Barua
Producer Tito
Music Pritam
Lyrics Javed Akhtar
Release Date 23-May-2008
Rating 0
Cast
Preity Zinta, Isha Koppikar, Shiney Ahuja, Dino Morea, Jai Kalra
Movie Details

The story from the sets of Har Pal, being directed by National Award winning director Jhanu Barua goes that the director was forced to summon the producer Tito on the sets one day to sort out actress Preity Zinta's problems.

Preity's problem was that she did not like it a bit that her costume and boots were identical to Isha Koppikar's in the film. Isha plays the second lead in the film. Preity's sulking is believed to have stalled the shooting for four to five hours. The problem started when Isha walked onto the sets wearing the same black coat and boots that Preity was wearing.

The scene was a prelude to a song which was to be shot later. When Preity saw Isha she was stunned and furious. She told Barua that it was unfair and that he should quickly make arrangements to change Isha's costume.

The unti went all out to explain to the actress that it was a mere coincidence. Barua and Tito explained to her that it was no big deal if Isha and she had a similar look for a particular scene. It was not deliberate as both the actresses had different designers.

Preity's costumes have been done by Surily Goel while those of Isha have been done by Payal Saluja. Preity took her own sweet time to agree that it was not a deliberate attempt to show her down. Thankfully she saw light soon enough, but not before five hours of the shoot had been wasted. Until then, poor Isha was left cooling her heels and wondering if she would be forced to adopt a new look.

Bollywood’s ‘blog wars’

They are being described as the Bollywood blog wars.

Some of India’s top film stars have taken to blogging in a big way.

But in a country where many fans accord their stars almost god-like status, not everyone is happy with what is being said.

In recent posts, two of India’s top stars have upset fans of the country’s most popular actor, Shah Rukh Khan.

Veteran superstar, Amitabh Bachchan, on his blog, first described Shah Rukh Khan’s new television quiz show as a flop.

Now he says his comments have been misunderstood by the media.

“Shah Rukh has been and is a friend and a wonderful colleague. He has never ever crossed that very delicate line between familiarity and respect,” he wrote in a recent post.

“I will apologise to Shah Rukh a hundred times if there is an iota of doubt in his mind about my conduct and behaviour towards him,” he said.

All is not well between SRK and Ganguly

MUMBAI: Has the peace in the Kolkata Knight Riders' camp been shattered? Are 'Dada' Sourav Ganguly and 'Badshah' Shah Rukh Khan not getting along with each other anymore? Yes, say insiders.

The two power centres in the Kolkata team are not seeing eye to eye on many issues. The problem apparently started with the entertainment tax that Shah Rukh Khan is paying for the matches being played at the Eden Gardens.

The Bollywood star wanted Ganguly to speak to West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya and try and get it abolished. The Kolkata captain, who is known to be close to the CM, has refused to oblige, at least till now.

Interestingly, it is learnt that Eden Gardens is the only stadium where an IPL team is paying entertainment tax. That is not all though. The bigger bone of contention is KKR's sudden dip in form and its poor performance in the last few games, harming their semifinal chances. Shah Rukh, sources say, is not too happy with this change of fortunes although he hasn't expressed his feelings openly. Ganguly, on the other hand, has not been too pleased with the team composition right from the beginning. The differences surfaced during the auction itself, with Sourav wanting more batsmen while the team management was more keen on bowlers.

The problems magnified when coach John Buchanan was given more powers than the captain himself. To add fuel to the fire, Shah Rukh announced that the coach will take all the decisions for the team next year onwards, upsetting Ganguly in the bargain.

Ganguly has apparently already begun showing his discontent: he preferred to go back home after the last match rather than stay back for a press conference to annouce Knight Riders' tie-up with a website. Said an insider, who was present at the event, "Shah Rukh did pass some caustic remarks saying, 'I thank all my teammates for being at the press conference but who can forget Dada who is missing from the event'."

The duo also had a spat when Khan was keen that his team fielded first in the last game against Chennai; Ganguly, however, preferred to bat first. Eventually, the Knight Riders lost by 3 runs on Duckworth-Lewis following a rain interruption.

Desperate Housewives: Season Finale (or Susan's Still a Freak)

Desperate Housewives
I don't know how Desperate Housewives does it. I don't know how they consistently put the most hateful hateable characters on screen but somehow...

Now that Susan's become mildly tolerable, enter Tom's creepy love child Kayla. I know she's just acting out, blah, blah, blah and generally I think Lynette is kind of a crappy mother but man... is it wrong to want to punch a 12-year old?

Also, what is up with this NRA "commercial" featuring Bree and Catherine? Good lord.

Okay, the episode is still going... I'll add more in a bit. Oooh look, Nathan Fillion!

Oops... Susan just veered back into lameland again. I don't know how I thought she'd gotten out of it. Then again, I wouldn't want my kid named Maynard, either. Reason # 1,237,038 not to have kids.

Hey! In your face, Kayla. You got busted, dearie. I almost feel sorry for her. Not really. Not even when her grandparents drive her away and she's screaming for her father out the back window. You reap what you sow, fictional little brat!

Oh my freaking (and as we all know I don't mean freaking) Gawd, Susan is a total nutjob!! Between not letting Julie go off to her Princeton Summer session and the whole renaming the baby behind Mike's back thing, I feel foolish that I believed for a second she'd been somewhat reformed. How does someone this self-centered make it through life?

Okay, so Justine Bateman's been playing Gabi & Carlos' drug dealing roommate and the cops came to bust her and Gabi helped her get away. Justine calls and says please bring me my teddy bear that my father gave me when I was five. Given what Justine looks like these days, this bear must be about 50 years old (sorry, Justine. Mallory feels like an eon ago) yet somehow looks brand new. And why is this bear even still around their house? Wouldn't the police have confiscated all her stuff? Oh look, it's full of a hundred thousand dollars!

Gary Cole is beating the crap out of Nathan Fillion. This feels wrong. Tom says he wants to be untouchable.

Susan's daughter just told her she's grown so much in the last five years. Eesh. I'd hate to see what she was like before.

The gay couple are not getting along. I'm not quite sure why they're still on the show. Not because they're gay, but because they seem so incidental.

Aww, the women of Wisteria Lane came together in the end to help one of their (now) own.

Five years later?! Wha?? Is this the last show ever? Why is Susan kissing some 20-year old?!

At least Gary Cole is dead. He's such a jerk. I mean his character. I'm sure he's delightful! And alive!

Til next season, right?

Aamir Khan caught everyone's attention with his blog

After Aamir Khan caught everyone's attention with his blog entry on Shahrukh, his dog; Shah Rukh Khan, the actor reacted to the dog-blog controversy. And here's what he had to say.

"Moving towards blogs is a way towards joining the journalist fraternity, I love journalists but I am an actor and would like to keep it that way."

Shah Rukh Khan said he chooses not to blog in reaction to Aamir Khan's recent blog entry that talks about a Shah Rukh licking his feet. This is what Aamir wrote in his blog: "Shahrukh is licking my feet and I am feeding him biscuits every now and then. What more can I ask for?"

While Aamir goes on to confirm that he's not referring to the King Khan but a dog named Shahrukh that belongs to the caretakers of his Panchgani home, there were other references.

Read between the lines: "Some of my friends claim that I bought the house just because of the dog. I would have to be a serious fan of Shahrukh's to want to do that."

But it seems like the King Khan is taking it all in his stride.

He said, "Hum log hum umar hai — main, Salman, Aamir. Aur hum jab milte hain toh is se bhi ajeeb batein karte hai. (All three of us — Salman, Aamir and me are the same age and when we meet, we talk stranger stuff than this.) I have to take it with a sense of humour and I do have a sense of humour. If i can do it with others, then I should accept it."

Well, that's the last word on the dog-blog controversy for now.

Ashwarya Rai dazzles at Cannes

The Cannes International Film Festival, the most glamorous event on the festival calendar has returned to celebrate its 61st year. The festival opened on Wednesday with a Fernando Meirelles's grim Brazilian drama Blindness. This year's star lineup offers a mix of new talent.

But the festival is devoid of Indian cinema, except for Dev Anand's Guide which is a part of the Classics section.

No other Indian film has made it to the competitive or non-competitive categories but a host of Bollywood stars are expected at the festival.

Aishwarya Rai was the first to grace the red carpet at Cannes. NDTV's Consulting Editor, Films, Anupama Chopra caught up with the pretty lady.

Anupama: In the past five years you have become the most constant connect with the Cannes film festival but Bollywood is already a thriving global film industry. So, why do we need to pay attention to this space?

Aishwarya: Having come here many a times, I have developed a kind of fantastic rapport with the people at this festival.

I genuinely bond with the people, the place and the festival. And yes, each year I am asked this question by the media. I feel, as a member of our film fraternity it will be fantastic to have representation here in Cannes too. But I don't think that should be used as a barometer to judge what we have or to lament. It could be an ambition. After all its is an individual choice. The filmmakers decide the need for a movie to be part of 'A' festival or be it the Cannes itself.

It happened with couple of my films, earlier the filmmakers had aspired to have the screening or the premiere here. But because the event is held in May it is more in their (filmmakers) interest to release the movie earlier in the year because Cannes doesn't screen a released movie. Like what happened with Ritu's (Rituparno Ghosh) movies for example Chokher Bali and Raincoat had both released earlier they couldn't come here. I am aware of the discussions with Jodhaa Akbar too. At the end of the day what happens is for good only and I am happy the way Jodhaa Akbar has been received. So may be some other time.

What's on earth? Who make crimes? Our people didn't do anything. Those junta do those crimes. Why don't earthquakes kill those at Naypyidaw. I can't imagine what's happening.

Another Storm is coming. And Aids are all wasted. Military Junta who ruled the country robbed the aids from both local and foreign, and labeled as their aids (to get votes for 'yes') while most of the people are starving and die of flood. And they stole most of the aids including "Nutrient Biscuits" for their army. And now they are driving back all the help Agencies. Most of the people haven't drink a single drop of water for 3 days. And in some regions, they refused refugees to give those aids and even beat! Some were driven off from the Monasteries and schools (used as refugee camps).

You can see some of the destruction after "Nargis"

Those are some the best I can get. Actually most of them are worst than that. I don't dare to post those pictures. I can't face it. They make me really sorry. And we are doing our best for those who suffered from the storm. May the luck helps us.

Fight of the decade? Lopez-Meralco vs. Gloria Arroyo

There are too many problems facing the nation which Gloria Arroyo still has to confront and address, yet she zeroes in on wresting management control from the Lopez-Meralco bloc, and even makes it appear that the rising Meralco price is the biggest problem Filipinos face, going to the extent of even calling on the masses to go forth and fight alongside her on the petition of Meralco to the Energy Regulator Commission (ERC).

She, who hardly toes the line of transparency that the Filipino people have been calling for, even calls for transparency in Meralco.

But in the same breath, she insists that she is not fighting the Lopezes, and is merely doing this to ensure lower electricity rates for the Filipinos.

There is no question that the high electricity bills from Meralco has become a problem of many — whether in business or at home.

There is also no question that Meralco has been making a lot of money, posting a profit of some P20 billion. And there is, too, the question of the Meralco management’s reluctance to provide a major stockholder, the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) with certain documents.

As admitted by board member Christian Monsod, Meralco cannot simply open its documents to every shareholder who number in the tens of thousands, and added that it is not advisable for Meralco to provide shareholders the papers they ask since some stockholders may have the conflict of interest — including GSIS.

That is hardly acceptable in an public corporation as it is, or should be, accountable to its stockholders — especially the major stockholders.

If Meralco is doing right, then there is really no reason for the management to keep away documents from a major stockholder that demands it.

Still, the question remains: Why is Gloria zeroing on Meralco when she certainly knows that the high electricity prices are hardly caused by Meralco alone? There is the Napocor that has not been following the Epira law, which mandates Napocor to lower its rates.

Besides, there are also other costs that helped bring about high power rates, such as the eVAT Gloria charges, plus several other charges, such as generation, distribution, transmission, plus of course the systems loss charges. Yet she says nothing about these extra charges that bring up the power cost.

The IPPs are also part of the problem, not to mention the very high oil prices.

The oil price hike is a big problem, yet neither Gloria nor her clueless Energy Secretary Angelo Reyes does anything about it as far as rising pump prices go. As admitted by Reyes himself, there is nothing the government can do to bring down the weekly increases in pump prices, as the industry has been regulated.

So why doesn’t Gloria demand transparency from these big oil firms, just as she and her aides demand transparency from Meralco? What’s poison for the goose should be poison for the gander. Fair is fair.

So why doesn’t she call on the masses, nay the Filipino people, who compose the LPG society, to fight the oil firms and lower the price of oil, as she does in the case of Meralco? Why doesn’t she apply the same standards? After all, LPG prices have zoomed, and a lot of poor Filipinos can’t afford the price of an LPG tank for cooking purposes, which is why many have already switched to charcoal cooking.

None of these is being mentioned by Gloria. Yet she has brought into play all her allies in Congress to put the pressure on Meralco.

Yet it is always MalacaƱang that claims congressional probes are a waste of time, and a forum for grandstanding. But this time, it wants the Senate anad the House to investigate. This is all to the good of electric consumers, but why isn’t this also being called upon by Gloria in the case of the oil companies, some of whom are said to be engaged in smuggling?

There’s more to this pressure on Meralco and a management change by MalacaƱang than meets the eye. It is more of a Gloria-Lopez fight and it is too evident not to see through her ploy.

Still, it will definitely be interesting to watch how the fight will end — whether the Lopezes retain control of Meralco or if the government, through the GSIS, takes over management control.

But it certainly looks like the Lopezes are willing to fight government — at least on the issue that will somehow be interrelated with the Lopez TV network.

The stockholders meeting will resolve the Meralco management change issue. But will Gloria’s fight with the Lopezes end after the stockholders meeting, or will more problems come the way of the Lopezes?

Time and action on both sides will tell.
